Featured content can be a powerful way to direct viewers to the rest of your content, it's also a great way to get (free) advertising.
Recommended Size: Everyone
First, access your youtube creator studio, to do this click on your picture in the top-right, then click on 'Creator Studio'.
After this, look to the left-hand menu, click on 'Channel'.
From the items that will appear underneath the heading click on 'Featured Content'.
From here two options will appear, 'Featured video' and 'Channel ad'.
If nothing has been selected for either option, the screen will look like this:
If you have, it will look like this:
In order to add either, click on the relevant button underneath each heading.
Featured video is the video that will be featured as a small overlay at the end of each video.
To add featured content, press on the button 'Feature content', from here a dialogue will appear asking you to select 'Most recent upload' or 'Choose a video or playlist'.
Most recent content is pretty self-explanatory, it will always be your most recent video/live-stream.
Selecting 'Choose a video or playlist' will add the following dialogue box, enabling you to select your video or playlist you want to feature.
Click 'Save' one you have decided what you want to feature, I personally recommend just to use most recent content.
The screen will update with the options for 'Featured video'.
From here you can change the time it will display using the drop-down labelled 'Display time', by default this will be set to 'End of video'. This can be set to 'Customised start timer' to left you to specify what time you want this to start at.
The 'Optimise timing' checkbox allows youtube to modify the display time based on user behaviour.
Click 'Update' to save your settings, or remove to change what content you want selecting (most recent/video/playlist).
Channel ad promotes a specific video to viewers, in the same way, an advert is displayed via AdWords on your videos. This is basically YouTube giving you free advertising.
To get started click on 'Select your channel ad', this dialogue box will appear:
By default, it will select all videos under two minutes (if you have any), to change this to other options such as 'Newest' or 'Most viewed' click on the drop-down in the top-right hand corner.
Once you have selected your video click 'Save', the screen will then update to show your channel ad in place of the button.
To change your channel ad, click 'Remove ad' and start this part over again.
From your channel page, you can create channel trailers for subscribers and non-subscribers.
To get to this feature, go to your channel page, this can be done by accessing creator studio then clicking on 'View channel'
From here, click on the button at the top labelled 'EDIT LAYOUT'
It will then take you to the old youtube layout where you can edit your channel.
From here, you have two heading to pay attention to 'For returning subscribers' and 'For new visitors'
For Returning Subscribers
If you select 'For returning subscribers' and hover over the 'What to watch next' section an edit button will appear in the top-right.
Clicking on this will open up the following interface in its place:
The drop-down will give you two options 'Latest Upload' or 'Latest activity'. Latest upload is your most recent content, shown in a format similar to what you saw when starting this process. Latest activity is similar but will show what videos you have liked, interacted etc. as well as mixing in your latest content.
If you click on feature content, it will bring up the following window. It works in pretty much the same way as the one you see when selecting your channel ad (see further up for details)
When you press save, it will allow you to add a heading. Type in what you want your returning subs to see here.
Once you've pressed save, the original dialogue will change to reflect the change. Press done when done.
To change this content, use the edit button you clicked on at the start of this tutorial.
For new visitors
If you select ‘For new visitors’ you will see a button labelled ‘Channel trailer’.
Once you click on this button, it will bring up the following window. It works in pretty much the same way as the one you see when selecting your channel ad (see further up for details)
When you press save, your trailer will appear in place like so:
To change your trailer, use the edit button you clicked on at the start of this tutorial.
